In a normal sales process a broker represents an owner of a piece of equipment to be sold.

That broker advertises this piece of equipment and stands to collect a substantial amount of commission upon it's sale, often times earning $10,000-$50,000 per sale.

The ideal situation for a machinery broker is to have both the seller and buyer at his disposal, this way he gets to keep all of the commission- the difference between what he negotiated as the price the current owner would accept and the selling price to the buyer.

It's not always true that a machinery broker or dealer finds both the buyer and the seller just by advertising or word of mouth, often times a regional sales person or another broker may have the buyer. In this case, they too will want a substantial piece of the action for acting as the middleman (having the buyer), often doing very little in the process and being very well compensated by your, as well as the previous owners, money. It makes your machine cost more if two or three other people need to make money.
